Girls rugby

Gateshead Girls vs RedcarBackground

Women's Rugby is now a well established sport with over 300 clubs and 10,000 participants in England alone. The Rugby Football Union for Women (RFUW) is the official governing body in England. Clubs running mini rugby have usually catered for girls up to the Under 12 age group by allowing them to play in mixed teams. Above that age, boys and girls must play in separate teams and most clubs have been unable to cater for older girls.

Working together

Gateshead Girls Rugby is a joint venture between Ryton Youth Rugby and Blaydon Womens Rugby. Ryton has had a mini rugby section since the late eighties: although heavily outnumbered by boys, there have always been a few girls who have taken part only to have to hang up their boots when they reach 13. Blaydon WRFC, on the other hand, has been established since the 1996-97 season and in a few short years has become a cornerstone of women's rugby in the North East of England. If this success is to be sustained, it is essential that younger players are given the opportunity to develop their skills and continue playing through their teen years.

The aim of Gateshead Girls Rugby is to provide high quality coaching and games for girls throughout the Gateshead Borough to develop their skills and enjoy the game and to promote rugby for women and girls.

Training and playing

Training and home matches usually take place at Ryton RFC, with occasional joint training sessions with the Womens Rugby section at Blaydon WRFC. More...

Schools programme

Gateshead Council, in conjunction with Active Sport, is promoting rugby for girls in Gateshead Borough. We work in partnership with the Council to assist in the delivery of their programme and to ensure that girls who are introduced to the game in school can pursue the sport further if they wish.
